How the vanilla PvP ranking system works
From patch 1.4 until the end of vanilla, PvP ranks were earned on a weekly curve. Each week, the honor you gained was compared with every other player of your faction on your realm who got at least 15 honorable kills, and you were placed in one of 15 standing brackets. Your bracket gave you rank points (RP), and your rank came from your total RP.
The catch is decay: every week your total loses 20% of its value before the new points are added. That is what makes the high ranks so hard. In the top bracket you earn 13,000 RP a week, and your total can never settle above 65,000 (where the 20% decay equals 13,000).
if the change is negative: it is halved, to a maximum loss of 2,500 RP

Standing brackets and how far each one takes you
The last column shows the number of weeks it takes to reach Rank 10 and Rank 14 from zero if you land in the same bracket every week. "Never" means the decay catches up with you first.
| Bracket | Top % of faction | RP per week | Highest rank | Weeks to R10 / R14 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 0.06% | 13,000 | Rank 14 | 5 / 12 |
| 14 | 0.3% | 12,000 | Rank 13 | 5 / never |
| 13 | 0.8% | 11,000 | Rank 12 | 6 / never |
| 12 | 2% | 10,000 | Rank 11 | 8 / never |
| 11 | 3.5% | 9,000 | Rank 10 | 10 / never |
| 10 | 6% | 8,000 | Rank 9 | never / never |
| 9 | 10% | 7,000 | Rank 8 | never / never |
| 8 | 15.9% | 6,000 | Rank 7 | never / never |
| 7 | 22.8% | 5,000 | Rank 6 | never / never |
| 6 | 32.7% | 4,000 | Rank 5 | never / never |
| 5 | 43.6% | 3,000 | Rank 4 | never / never |
| 4 | 56.6% | 2,000 | Rank 3 | never / never |
| 3 | 69.7% | 1,000 | Rank 2 | never / never |
| 2 | 84.5% | 400 | Rank 1 | never / never |
| 1 | 100% | 0 | — | never / never |
Example: the road to Rank 14
Starting from nothing in bracket 15 every week, you have 13,000 RP after the first week (Rank 4), 23,400 after the second, and you pass 60,000 RP for Grand Marshal or High Warlord in week 12. Drop to bracket 14 even once near the end and the 12,000 RP doesn't cover the decay, which is why the race for Rank 14 needed the very top spot week after week.
Falling is gentler than rising. If you stop playing, your RP still decays by 20%, but because losses are halved and limited to 2,500 a week, a Rank 14 player loses about one rank every two weeks rather than collapsing at once.
Classic Era is different
Patch 1.14.4 for Classic Era replaced this system: ranks now come from a simpler honor curve with little decay, and Rank 14 takes about 8 weeks of steady play. Use this calculator for the original 1.12 system, used in vanilla and in the first years of WoW Classic, and on servers that still run it.
