WoW Hit Cap & Combat Rating Calculator (TBC / Wrath)
Enter your hit rating and talents to see how close you are to the hit cap against raid bosses. The calculator also converts any combat rating to a percentage and checks the expertise and defense caps for tanks, for The Burning Crusade (level 70) and Wrath of the Lich King (level 80).

Hit caps in TBC and Wrath
Every attack or spell you make has a chance to miss, and that chance grows quickly when the target is higher level than you. Raid bosses count as three levels above you, so they are the target that matters for the hit cap. Once your hit chance equals the target's miss chance, extra hit does nothing: you are hit capped.
| Attack and target | TBC hit % | TBC rating | Wrath hit % | Wrath rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melee & ranged vs raid boss | 9% | 142 | 8% | 263 |
| Spells vs raid boss | 16% | 202 | 17% | 446 |
| Melee & ranged vs same level | 5% | 79 | 5% | 164 |
| Spells vs same level | 4% | 51 | 4% | 105 |
| Dual-wield auto attacks vs raid boss | 28% | 442 | 27% | 886 |
The rating columns assume no hit from talents or buffs. Every 1% you get elsewhere lowers the rating you need by 15.77 (melee) or 12.62 (spell) at level 70, and by 32.79 or 26.23 at level 80.
Where else hit comes from
- Talents such as Precision, Elemental Precision, Suppression or Focused Aim. Enter the total percentage in the calculator.
- Racial traits. The Draenei aura gives 1% hit to the Draenei and their party.
- Raid buffs and debuffs. In TBC, an Elemental shaman's Totem of Wrath adds 3% spell hit for the party. In Wrath, Misery from a Shadow priest or Improved Faerie Fire from a Balance druid gives 3% spell hit against the target.
Put talent hit in the first box and everything else in the second; the calculator subtracts both from the cap before working out how much rating you still need.
Combat ratings: why the numbers change at 80
Ratings on gear are converted to percentages based on your level, and the higher your level, the more rating you need for the same 1%. That is why 142 hit rating caps a level 70 melee character against bosses, while a level 80 needs 263 for a lower 8% cap. Some values at level 80, such as armor penetration, were also changed in patches during Wrath; the calculator uses the final 3.3.5 values.

Expertise and the dodge cap
Expertise lowers the chance that your melee attacks are dodged or parried by 0.25% per point. A raid boss dodges 6.5% of attacks from the front or back, so 26 expertise removes dodges entirely. That is 103 expertise rating at level 70 and 214 at level 80, minus any expertise from talents or racials (for example the human and orc weapon racials). Attacking from behind, bosses can't parry, so damage dealers stop at the dodge cap; tanks, who stand in front, also benefit from expertise past it.
Defense cap for tanks
A raid boss has a 5.6% chance to land a critical hit on a tank at the base defense skill for their level. Each point of defense above base removes 0.04% of that, so a tank needs 140 defense skill above base to become uncrittable: 490 defense at level 70 (about 332 defense rating) and 540 at level 80 (about 689 rating). Talents that reduce the chance to be critically hit, and resilience in TBC, count toward the same 5.6%.
